Orient Bay...
The beach is a short stroll from the apartments, (1-2 minutes) and a few feet from the pool. It is a long sandy strip that sweeps around an East facing blue water cove and extends about 2 miles. The powdery white sand beach is protected from the Atlantic waves by a coral reef, and the sea bottom has a very gradual slope. We are at the quiet northern end.
Orient Bay is known by many names. Whether you call it Baie Orientale, or Orient Beach, it is St Martin's finest. Situated in a truly majestic setting with the mountains rising up all around, the islands of Green Key, Tintamarre and Pinel are just off shore, different parts of the bay are referred to as different beaches... Kontiki Beach, Kakao Beach, Bikini Beach, Waikiki Beach and Coco Beach. But the bay is one glorious sandy strip and these diverse names have evolved around the nearest beach bar.
The center of the beach is very developed. Lined with tiki huts, colorful beach chairs and restaurants. There is a lot of action with many watersports facilities including parasailing, waterskiing and boat hire. Kite surfers often use this beach and its rolling waves are good for body surfing too. Here you will also find shops and restaurants, some with live bands on busy nights. You can stroll in the surf and view sun-worshippers in all shapes and sizes passing by. Strains of Salsa, Bachata, or Merengue music waft over you from the bars that dot the beach.
Beach chairs, umbrellas and the closest beach bar...
Since no apartments at Hotel Mont Vernon leave beach chairs on the beach, (other people would use them or take them away), many guests take advantage of the loungers and umbrellas available at Bo Bo Jam, the closest beach bar, about 200 meters away. Some nights Bo Bo Jam have live music and guests have said that the food is quite good.
There is, of course, loungers and sun cover by the pool.
Snorkelling...
Beyond Club Orient, the massive reef that protects the bay joins the southern end of the beach. The area has been recognized as a marine reserve.
I am told that snorkeling is very good at Pinel Island which is a short ferry ride from French Cul De Sac... a short distance from our location.

New Year...
They let off fireworks on the beach for new year.
Clothing optional?
At the far, (Southern), end of the beach is Club Orient... a nudist resort that has resulted in Orient Bay being described as a "clothes optional" beach. Certainly it is true that early in the morning nudists walk the length of the beach and back. So if you are on the beach between 7.00 am and 8.00 you are very likely to see them. But after 8.00 the gendarme (police) discourage nudists from straying from the area in front of the resort, so you don't see much total nudity at our end of the beach during the day. Of course, St Martin is part of France and it is perfectly acceptable for women go topless in the beach.

There are many nice beaches around St Martin that you can visit if by car. You can read about those here. A short drive from the apartments is Anse Marcel, a small beach with calm waters that many guests consider ideal.
