Geographica webpages on St Martin

Map...

Map of the island is here.

Supermarkets...

SUPERMARKETS: There is a small grocery on site. But provisioning is best done on the Dutch side. Food on the Dutch side is cheaper than the French and big stores are cheaper than small ones. We suggest GRAND MARCHE which is located at the roundabout on Bush Road, between Philipsburg and Simpson Bay.

Shops and Restaurants...

This is such an extensive subject that we can’t do it justice here. In fact we have a complete section dedicated to recommendations of ours and our guests.  We deal with individual recommendations there, so here I give a general overview.

There are shops and restaurants about half a mile away...  down the beach... more restaurants down the road the same distance...  Grand Case, heralded as "the gastronomic capital of the Caribbean" is about a mile away by road. We recommend that you have a car as cabs are hard to find, and can be expensive.

The best jewelry and electronics shopping is in Philipsburg. The Dutch side is generally cheaper and all prices are in US dollars.

Excursions...

I have three links for you...

Firstly check out our guest’s blog. We encourage guests to leave info on the things they most enjoyed doing. It is new, but take a look.

Second check out St Maarten Cruise Excursions.  Ask if you can book without being on a cruise. I suspect that you can.

If not try this link

Language...

Dutch side everyone speaks Engish as well as Dutch. French side is mostly French speaking but some speak English.

Weather...

Temperatures are similar year round but in Sept, Oct & Nov we have occasional  tropical waves that bring stormy weather for a few days. Those are unpredictable.

Money...

Currency on Dutch St Maarten is Netherland Antillies Florins (Guilders) but US$ are accepted everywhere. But remember that you are staying on the FRENCH side, (St Martin), which  rarely accepts Florins so DO NOT BOTHER TO BUY THEM. The currency on the French side is Euro. The majority of places take US$ too and some restaurants give better deals than the exchange rate to encourage business. I suggest you arrive with US$ and change up a few Euros here IF you need them. There are change points in Marigot.

Ferries...

Ferries are available to St Barts and Anguilla. There is also a ferry to Pinel Island nearby.

Hospitals...

Both French and Dutch sides have a hospital with medevac capability to specialists in Martinique and Curacao.

Time...

We are on Eastern standard time give or take an hour. There is no daylight savings adjustments.
