THE PEOPLE BEHIND YODA
Kathy was the other half of Yoda’s body on EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Confused? Well, as Frank Oz’s right arm operated Yoda’s neck, jaw, lips, nose and eyebrows, and Frank’s left arm operated Yoda’s left arm, Kathy operated Yoda‘s right hand and any other parts of the body that needed animating. Because the production executives were sensitive to union issues, she was never credited as a Yoda puppeteer. Instead she was credited as a “performing assistant: Yoda.” Consequently her contribution to Yoda went largely unnoticed.
Kathy is an actress, voice actress, and puppeteer who began working with Jim Henson on the third season of The Muppet Show, primarily as Gaffer the Backstage Cat. She was closely associated with several Jim Henson projects. She was a voice director for DOG CITY, was a muppet designer for THE MUPPET MOVIE. She was a key performer for FRAGGLE ROCK, where she created the character of Mokey. She performed the Gelfling Kira in the movie THE DARK CRYSTAL.
After Jim’s death she was one of the creators of ALLEGRA’s WINDOW where she operated Allegra and in 2000 she was also one of the creators of the TV series BETWEEN THE LIONS.
Kathy, with her husband, (another former Muppet designer), Michael K. Frith, joined forces with the British charity "No Strings" to create the film THE STORY OF THE LITTLE CARPET BOY for children in Afghanistan, warning of the dangers of land mines.

*NOTE: THIS SITE IS IN NOT CONNECTED TO LUCASFILM OR GEORGE LUCAS who own all rights to Yoda and the creatures from Star Wars. The use of the string "yoda" in our domain name and the presentation of images from the saga are courtesy of their generosity in allowing us to do so. Our use of the name YodaGuy is NOT intended to imply that Nick was the only "guy" who worked to produce Yoda. Several people were involved in making four versions of Yoda for ESB and more again for versions in ROTJ, PTM and AOTC. (Read making Yoda for more info). "YodaGuy" is intended to imply ONLY that Nick Maley is a guy who was involved. Yoda and all creatures for the classic Star Wars trilogy were masterminded by Stuart Freeborn who Nick worked with periodically over a 7 year period. The initial drawing: Ralph McQuarrie. Other people involved include Wendy Midner, Graham Freeborn, Ron Hone, Bob Keen and Nick Dudman.
