2 countries, one great island
the twin nationalities of our sunny isle
St. Martin / St. Maarten is the smallest island, worldwide, to be divided between two nations... France (53 km2) and the Netherlands Antilles (34 km2). The division dates back to March 23, 1648 when France and the Dutch Republic agreed to divide the island between their two nations and signed the Treaty of Concordia which has lead to over 360 years of peaceful cohabitation.
The dual identity of the island often generates confusion about the correct spelling of the name. The southern half of the island, known as Sint Maarten, is Dutch and is part of the Netherlands Antilles. The northern half comprises Saint Martin and is an overseas collectivity of France. The border is almost imperceptible and people often cross back and forth without realizing they are entering a different country. Collectively, the two territories are known as "St-Martin/St Maarten", sometimes referred to as SXM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_Antilleshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_collectivityhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franceshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2shapeimage_3_link_3
