May 1992 to May 1995 Systems Analyst for University of Texas Institute for Geophysics

Wrote GPS based navigation system in C++ which used an Openwindows and X-windows graphical user interface. To perform its function it utilized shared memory which was written by a process connected to a GPS receiver. The display program then read this memory to create its display. This system displayed the ship's position to within 2 meters superimposed on a map of a geophysical survey. To develop this system I used the Sunsoft software development tool set including DBTOOL as well as XDBX debuggers. The graphical user interface was generated with Codeview.
Wrote a Motif to Fortran application programming interface in C++ to be used by geophysicists in the development of software to support their research. To implement this library I used Make, The Sunsoft C++ compiler and Source Code Control System, and XDBX. It was developed for SunOs 4.1.3 and Solaris 2.5. To Test I had to make sure that the library would compile and run in both operating systems.
Served as Systems supervisor and Quality Control Programmer during 1993 Research cruise aboard R/V Vickers. Wrote data analysis and translation programs in C++ and Fortran for SunOs 4.1.3 and the Macintosh. Wrote scripts and MS-DOS batch files to aid in e-mail delivery.
Configured sendmail for mail delivery in a temporary local network. I used the XDBX debugger, Source Code Control System and the Sunsoft C++ compiler.
Wrote applications that translated old geophysical data formats to new formats for archiving purposes. This software was written in both C++ and Fortran It read data from reel to reel or exabyte tape and wrote it to disk. At various times I used Dbxtool, Xdbx, compilers, SCCS, AWK, and Make to develop these applications.
Performed systems maintenance for thirty networked Sun workstations using Solaris 2.5 and Solaris 1.0. I utilized Openwindows, Imake, Bourne shell, C++, and AWK to write programs while performing this function. Performed Full operating system installations of SunOs 4 and Solaris 2.5, maintained backups, and restored lost data from backup tapes. Added users and ensured proper use of disk space and other resources. Maintained Exabyte helical scanned, QIC-50, and 1600 BPI reel-to-reel tape drives. Maintained apple Laser writer and large format color and B/W raster printers.
Spoke with software and hardware vendors about new acquisitions and the maintenance of old systems. Wrote a white paper on X-Servers that was posted to the internet to good reviews. Purchased Sun workstations, tape drives, X-Servers and supplies like tape, ink cartridges.
