Jumby Bay Resort

Jumby Bay is one of Antigua & Barbuda's most elite resorts. Superbly located two miles off the coast of Antigua on one of our largest offshore islands, it's the destination of choice of many celebrities who bask in peace and security at around $600 - $1200 per night. Nearly a third of the 300-acre private island is occupied by the 39 suites and 11 villas that are the Jumby Bay resort. The hotel enjoys it's privacy. I am told that the previous management actually discouraged Princess Diana from staying there because they didn't want the hassle of dealing with the press.

The island has no cars (maybe a mini bus or two). A network of paths, ideal for walking or biking, connect facilities and private millionaire's homes. The transport of choice is golf carts. The suites and villas are designed to maximize ocean views and generate "an indoor/outdoor living experience". Each villa includes a kitchen and a living room that opens onto a terrace. The beach is easily accessible either by a leisurely stroll or short bicycle ride.

The open-aired Verandah Restaurant overlooks the ocean and is right by the beach for a convenient lunch. Traditional Caribbean specialties and light fare make up the menu. There is often live music and dancing under the stars. A Beachside Barbeque is served every Wednesday.

Dinner is served five nights a week the elegant Estate House which is Jumby Bay's main restaurant. It is located in a 230-year-old English plantation and specializes in European, American and Caribbean cuisine. The a menu changes nightly.

Although the resort is offshore, the spectacular waters that surround it are calm and protected by reef which also makes for great snorkeling. The main beach is everything that you would hope for (though there are two more if you want a change) and with so few rooms you won't bump into to many other tourists while you're there.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous host, Robin Leach, the force behind the Great Chefs TV series, has been a resident there for about 17 years. He emailed me out of the blue to congratulate me on "a superb site" when AntiguaToday.com first emerged. Robin worked tirelessly as the guest auctioneer for the American Women's Club's 6th annual fund-raiser which was held at the hotel on March 27th 1999. The fund is used for good causes around the island and raised over US$ 20,000.00 THAT ONE NIGHT.
