Jolly Harbour is a development of some 600 condos on a 500 acre estate. There's two beaches, a marina, a shopping complex, a golf course and sports center with squash, a full sized pool, a splash pool, and a kids' wading pool. Unlike a regular hotel it provides a complete community atmosphere with home owners, long term renters, shopkeepers, restaurateurs, yachties, fishermen and boat refurbishers intermingling with tourists and hotel workers.

Regular hotel rooms give way to 200 two story, terraced waterfront "homes". Most feature a master bedroom with 1 queen sized bed and a second bedroom usually with 2 twin beds, private bathroom, a kitchen and combination dining/living room opening onto a private covered patio.

For some obscure reason they made me the Commodore of the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club (they are probably wondering why too!), and I must declare a favoritism for this self contained Caribbean water world. You will find me racing there most Saturdays on my boat Pumkin along with half a dozen other keen racers. We NEVER have enough crew so if you're a sailor don't hesitate to give us a call and come out for a free ride. After the races we retire to the Dogwatch Tavern, a friendly bar with draft beer, pool tables and great burgers which doubles as our club house. Debate over the afternoons events is always enthusiastic and good natured.

It is hard to be specific about the villa features as there are several accommodation providers at Jolly Harbour and so details vary. The most prominent operator is Jolly Harbour Villas which also offers a Kidz Club for children between 4 and 12 and holds Manager's cocktail reception every Thursday. Their villas include in-bedroom safe deposit box and telephone. Cribs are available for infants. Standard villas come with fans. Superior villas provide air conditioning in the bedrooms. The shopping plaza features a variety of shops including boutiques, a hair stylist, liquor store, car rental agency, boat rental, bicycle rental, moped rental, galleries, net and fax services, a music store and countless others. Click here for details. A laundry service is also available and a shuttle will ferry you throughout the complex. (call them early as they take time to arrive.

Adult gaming at the Coral Reef Casino is located in the shopping center and a HUGE new gambling complex is completing construction.

For sports fans there is LOTS of choice including tennis and squash, golf, (on Jolly Harbour's own 18 hole, par 71 course), miniature golf, as well as sailing and sport fishing charter boats. A variety of non-motorized water sports are available on the beach. I used to hear occasional criticism of the golf course but most individuals recognize that, due to dry weather and proximity to salt water, courses in the Caribbean are almost never as manicured as they are in other parts of the world. It's a matter of expectations.... and something of a trade off. Given the stunning location, spectacular beaches, convenient shops and restaurants, most players who get to play their favorite game in the beautiful Caribbean sunshine can overlook a few sandy patches on their way to the golf club's stylish bar.

Antigua Resorts who operate Jolly Harbour Villas specialize in romantic tropical weddings in beautiful surroundings. A gazebo overlooking the sea is very popular for that purpose but you can be married on the beach if you like. They do a package for U.S. $630.00 which includes registrar costs and ceremony charges, government fees, garden flower bouquet, boutonniere for the groom, wedding cake, a bottle of champagne, taxes and gratuities. This MUST be prearranged through the hotel's US. Reservations office and directed to the wedding coordinator. The package is FREE if you booked 13 nights or more and the all-inclusive Plan. Requirements should be prearranged through reservations and directed to the wedding coordinator.

• Island tours (A visit to Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights is recommended. So is AntiguaPaddles eco kayaking, round the island catamaran tours and Jolly Roger.

Jolly Harbour Villas has a published DRESS CODE. Generally dress is casual during the day provided that you wear shoes and cover ups in the restaurants and lobby. However they say "After 6:30 PM, for men - slacks or tailored Bermuda length shorts are fine, along with collared shirts (no "short shorts", cutoffs, jeans, T-shirts or tank tops, please). For women - dresses, skirts, slacks, culottes or tailored Bermuda-length shorts are wonderful (but please, no "short shorts", cutoffs or jeans)." Men may wear sleeveless shirts and/or tailored Bermuda-length shorts.

POWER IS 220 AND THE PLUG ARE DIFFERENT (@ JOLLY HARBOUR) THAN ANY I'VE EVER SEEN... BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THEY HAVE MANY US VISITORS AND GETTING ADAPTERS TO FIT A US PLUG SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM... I SHOULD THINK UK PLUGS WOULD BE THE SAME... WE WENT TO THE DRUG STORE AT JOLLY HARBOUR AND BOUGHT AN ADAPTER PLUG AND I'M NOT KIDDING THE LADY THERE PULLED OUT A BOX OF 30 OR SO ALL DIFFERENT...

We concur wholeheartedly. If you like a clean beach,golf,mini golf, excellent staff,wonderfully groomed

grounds,great resturants and more you have made the right choice. We are as we write making plans for Feb 2003.

This will be our 8th or 9th stay a Jolly Harbour, we have stayed at others on the island but they don't compare to

Jolly Harbour. I would suggest you rent a golf cart to get around and do it by e-mail before you leave(acouple of
